Dubai Municipality - Jebel Ali Strategic Sewerage Tunnel
Dubai Municipality is planning to undertake the construction of deep strategic sewer tunnel in Jebel Ali, UAE.
The project is designed to transform the existing sewerage system from a pumped system to a gravity system, involving the decommissioning of current pump stations. The project aims to provide a sustainable, innovative, and reliable service for future generations.
The first package, J1 includes Jebel Ali tunnels (North) and terminal pump stations (TPS). The tunnels will extend approximately 42 kilometers, and the links will extend 10km.
The second package, J2 includes the southern section of the Jebel Ali tunnels, which will extend 16km and have a link stretching 46km.
The fourth package, J3 includes construction of 129km of links. This package will be implemented under a design, build, finance (DBF) PPP model, featuring a concession period spanning 25 to 35 years.
The US$16,100 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of a deep tunnel terminating at terminal pump stations at Jebel Ali
2. Construction of a pumping station
3. Construction of sewer links
4. Civil works
5. Construction of associated facilities

Dubai Municipality starts the geotechnical investigation on the project. The site investigation programme is carried out by the Drainage and Irrigation Department of Dubai Municipality which is expected to take up to nine months. Parsons has also engaged a company to carry out drilling works on 250 boreholes along the sewage network route. The drilling rigs will be equipped with drilling rods, drill bits, excavation tools and various in-situ testing equipment, these rigs will be transported to the locations on the proposed route of the sewerage tunnel and the rigs are expected to stay at each location between two to five days. Once the field works are complete, the results will be evaluated, which will determine the right construction methologies for the tunnels, link sewers ans shaft excavation.
