Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM) are planning to develop the gas pipeline project connecting Nigeria and Morocco via 13 countries in West Africa which will take 25 years to complete.

The project is also known as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project (previously Nigeria Morocco Gas Pipeline). The project will have a capacity to transport 30 billion cubic meters (m3) of natural gas.

It will be developed in phases. However, the exact scope of the phases is yet to be revealed.

The US$25,000 million project includes the following:

1. Laying of 6840 km gas pipeline

2. Construction of 17 compressor stations

3. Construction of 2 receiving stations

4. Construction of 6 offtake stations

5. Construction of 1 intake station

6. Infrastructure and related works

7. Installation of gas injection facilities

8. Installation of the 61 valve station

9. Installation of safety equipment

10. Laying of subsea cables

11. Associated facilities

The following parameters were used for the onshore pipeline design:

a. Design life: 40 years

b. OD - nominal pipe size: 48 in (1219 mm)

c. Maximum design temperature (°C): 75

d. Minimum design temperature (°C): -10

e. Design pressure (barg): 103

f. Maximum allowable operating pressure (barg): 93

g. Material specification grade: API 5L X70 PSL 2

h. Specified minimum yield Strength (MPa): 485

i. Cathodic protection: impressed current

The following parameters were used for the offshore pipeline design:

a. Design flowrate: max. 30 billion m3/y, varying per section

b. Material specification grade: DNVGL 450

c. External coating: 3LPE

d. Internal coating: high solid liquid epoxy coating (solvent-free)

e. Thickness of concrete weight coating: 50 - 95 mm

f. Cathodic protection: sacrificial anodes (offshore), impressed current (shore/onshore)

g. Standard: DNV-ST-F101

h. Design pressure: 220 bara
