Qatar Fertilizers Company (QAFCO) is undertaking the development of the seventh expansion adjacent to its existing complex at Mesaieed Industrial City, Qatar.

The project earlier called as QAFCO 7 however it is now known as the Blue Ammonia Plant. It has a renewable energy capacity of 35MW.

The company primarily exports its product to Asia and Australia. QAFCO's existing complex, located at the Mesaieed Industrial City, comprises the following plants:

QAFCO I: 900 tonnes a day (t/d) ammonia & 1000 t/d urea (Completion: 1973)

QAFCO II: 900 t/d ammonia & 1000 t/d urea (Completion: 1979)

QAFCO III: 1500 t/d ammonia & 2000 t/d urea (Completion: 1997)

QAFCO IV: 2000 t/d ammonia & 3200 t/d urea (Completion: 2004)

QAFCO V: 4600 t/d of ammonia & 3850 t/d of urea (Completion: 2011)

QAFCO VI: 3100000 tonnes a year (t/y) of Urea (Completion: 2012)

The US$1300 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of ammonia Plant (1.2 MTPA Blue Ammonia)

a. Construction of feed purification plant

b. Construction of reforming units

c. Construction of ammonia synthesis

2. Offsites and utilities:

a. Construction of ammonia/urea storage systems

b. Construction of cogeneration plant (140MW of power and 600 tonnes per hour of steam)

c. Construction of jetty & ship loading facility

d. Installation of air separation unit

e. Installation of cooling towers

f. Construction of water desalination plant

e. Construction of effluent treatment plant

f. Construction of conveyor system & product handling

3. Equipment:

a. Installation of reactors

b. Installation of boilers

c. Installation of five compressor units

d. Installation of five team turbines

e. Installation of four frames 6B gas turbines

4. Installation of hydrolyzers

5. Installation of carbamate condensers

6. Installation of ejectors

7. Installation of vacuum separators

8. Installation of prilling towers

Further, QAFCO V when completed in 2011 would boost QAFCO’s total production capacity to 4 million tonnes a year (t/y) of urea, up from current levels of 2.8 million t/y and to 3.1 million t/y of ammonia, up from 2 million t/y.
