Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) is constructing an independent water project in Al Mirfa, Abu Dhabi, the UAE.

The proposed seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant is expected to cater to the farms in Liwa and to become the UAE’s third largest low-carbon intensive RO plant.

The US$620 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of 120 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) water desalination plant

2. Construction of storage tanks

3. Construction of seawater intake system

4. Installation of pumping stations

5. Installation of metering stations

6. Laying of pipelines

7. Associated facilities

Engie has been selected as the developer and a consortium of SIDEM with Al Nasr Contracting Company as the main contractor for the contract to develop the 120 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) plant. The consortium of Acwa Power with Doosan, GS Inima with Metito, Engie with Sidem, and Acciona themselves have submitted the bids for the project.

Teams led by Spain’s Acciona, France’s Engie, GS Inima and Acwa Power have submitted the lowest bids. L1 Acciona L2 Engie L3 GS Inima L4 Acwa Power. The client has received two proposals from each company for 80 MIGD and 120MIGD. The project is expected to start commercial operation in Q2 2025.
